The New School Alumna Marcia Butler Launches + Signs Her Debut Memoir
The New School’s Mannes School of Music continues to celebrate its centennial by recognizing its talented group of alumni and their accomplishments. As part of the festivities, Mannes will host a free event to look back on the career of alumna and professional oboist, Marcia Butler.
The event will launch Butler’s debut memoir, The Skin Above My Knee, with a signing and select musical performances. Joining her for an in conversation interview will be former WNYC host Tim Page, a Mannes alum and a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist.
The event is first-come first-served and will take place at the Glassbox Theater at Arnhold Hall (13th Street and Sixth Avenue) on Monday, March 6th at 6 PM.
The launch will include performances by English horn soloist and member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Pedro Diaz, who will play excerpts of music discussed in the book. Light snacks will accompany the performances and discussion.
Butler’s work has received strong early praise from The New York Times and New York Magazine. Publishers Weekly describes the book as “a moving account of how passion and creativity can be powerful weapons against neglect, cruelty and self-harm.”
The event is perfect for aspiring musicians, Mannes students and alumni as well as those looking for a good read; the book will be available for purchase and signing by both Butler and Page.
