Bike Network Expansion Coming to Union Square This Fall

New and Extended Bike Lanes Along Union Square Park

mapExpanded bike lanes are in orange, brown, and purple. Map: DOT

Biking through Union Square is getting safer and easier for thousands of cyclists that ride through the Square daily. The City’s Department of Transportation is in the midst of major improvements to the area’s bike network this season, closing gaps and installing protected lanes, increasing safety and mobility for both pedestrians and cyclists.

The northbound protected lane on Fourth Avenue will now continue from 12th Street past the intersection at 14th Street, continuing up Union Square East, and turning west along the park at 17th Street. The current one-way bike lane along the east and north side of the park will be widened to become a two-way lane. Additionally, bike lanes will be implemented on East 15th, 16th, 17th Streets and West 17th Street.

Pick up a Citi Bike at one of the Union Square docks and enjoy the new lanes in the Square on your way to explore the city.
