Capital One is bringing a new concept store just south of Union Square Park at 14th Street and Broadway. The Commercial Observer reports that the bank has teamed up with an undisclosed food retailer to introduce what they describe as a “store within a store” concept at 853 Broadway. The building is putting the finishing touches on a major $10 million renovation, with Capital One reported to have signed a 10-year lease for 15,000 square feet of retail space. A portion of the ground floor is currently home to MAC Cosmetics which opened late last year. The new concept is the latest innovation in the neighborhood. Last year, The Red Door opened off the park on East 17th Street offering speed services such as blow outs and nails, a first for an Elizabeth Arden spa. Also last year, Walgreens began offering a full-service sushi bar (complete with Chef) and Fro-Yo following Duane Reade changing it up with growlers of beer for purchase in-store. There’s no question that the diversity and popularity of Union Square make it a place to try something special. These unique concepts have also drawn record numbers of visitors to the neighborhood. Just last year, USP counted 383,000 visitors walking through the neighborhood on a typical summer day (view the 2014 Pedestrian Activity Report). Stay tuned, there are sure to be more creative twists and innovative concepts opening up in the months to come.
