Do you still have that Christmas tree in your living room? Don’t just toss it out on the curb. Recycle it at the annual Mulchfest 2014 in Union Square Park (at Park Avenue South and 17th Street) on Sunday, January 12th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Leave your tree with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, and they’ll turn your holiday joy into much-needed mulch for the city.
Another good reason to recycle your tree? To help save the Rockaways! The city Parks Department plans to use trees donated during Mulchfest to create dunes along portions of the beach to help fight erosion, which has become a serious issue after Superstorm Sandy destroyed the boardwalk and ate away tons of sand. They hope to get 3,000 trees this year for the project. Read the full article here and don’t forget to bring your tree to drop off this Sunday in the park!
