You may have noticed some heavy machinery in the park yesterday. Our friends over at the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation spent the day meticulously painting the Independence Flagstaff in the heart of Union Square Park. The flagstaff recently celebrated its 83rd birthday with a detailed restoration before Independence Day. Now with a new coat of paint on the pole, the historic landmark is looking as stunning as ever!
The Independence Flagstaff was a gift of the Tammany Society, whose building was recently landmarked by the city. The flagstaff was completed in 1926 by sculptor Anthony De Francisci and commemorates the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
