Today workers began washing four Union Square monuments in preparation for Independence Day. Beginning with the George Washington statue (the oldest in the city), followed by Abraham Lincoln, Marquis de Lafayette, and the Independence Flagstaff, workers will use a high-pressure hose to rid the figures of dirt from head to hoof. Each monument will also get a new coat of hot wax, requiring workers to use propane torches to wax the figures.
