Tucked at the top of an unassuming building on West 14th Street (near 5th Avenue) is the home of Paragraph – one of the city’s few shared work spaces specifically for writers . The space was conceived by Lila Cecil and Joy Parisi when they were creative writing MFA students at the New School University, just a block away. “We saw the need for space to write away from our apartments, but out of the coffee shops. Union Square is where everyone would meet and it is central to everything. We knew from the start that we wanted to be here,” Joy stated in a recent USP visit. Seven years later, Paragraph is thriving. Distractions are minimized (there are no phones) and Wi-Fi, coffee, a small library of books, and a kitchen are offered to part-time and full-time members.
