The Vineyard Theatre debuted their 30th season with Checkers, a new play about former President Richard Nixon, receiving rave reviews. The play is set in 1952 when Nixon was the Republican nominee for vice president, and explores the Nixon marriage in a moment of crisis, as he delivered his so-called Checkers speech addressing allegations of financial improprieties. The show was threatened by Hurricane Sandy, which forced the theatre to cancel a week of performances. However, a swelling of community support and swift action allowed the show to re-open quickly with a strong resurgence in sales. With the help of the Union Square community, Checkers is now extended through December 5th at the Vineyard Theatre.
