Despite the bustle of Union Square, Summer in the Square has introduced a new peace in the South Plaza at 9 AM. Today, yogis gathered for a free class provided by CLAY Health Club + Spa. For an hour, participants bent their bodies and posed in the sun.
Today the History Channel is in the North Plaza serving up sausage and games to visitors of the North Plaza. We stopped by earlier today to see what the excitement was about. The games are really fun (and there weren’t lines at the time of this writing). The cookout is part of a national tour the channel is doing. Come on down, they’re in the park till 6 PM. More information can be found here.
We did it. We brought a free zumba class to this year’s Summer in the Square and it seems you all had a great time (we did too!). Last night at 6 PM, hundreds gathered for a free Zumba Class from Peridance. We’ve never seen so many people doing a synchronized dance since the last Freddie Prince Jr movie. It was incredible. There’s more to come! Sifa will be swinging her hips again on July 19th and we’ll have other classes all summer long – see our full dance schedule.
PS: If you liked Zumba, you can get a free Peridance class and/or reduced tuition in our District Deals
Yesterday was the first day of Jazz in the Square in Union Square Park. The soothing sounds of musicians from the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music was a delight of many brave parkgoers. The audience crammed under umbrellas and the canopy of park trees just to listen to the music against the gentle sound of the afternoon rain. It was really beautiful – see the photos below. Jazz in the Square coincides with our Summer in the Square program and runs every Tuesday this summer until August 7th.
Meet the man who is going to get you in shape this summer. Tom came all the way from England to get you in shape at Summer in the Square. Okay, not really, but we can pretend. Tom trains the very best over at CLAY Health Club + Spa and is actually a neighborhood resident! A boxer of ten years, Tom’s personal training regiment is sure to work every muscle. Seriously, we hurt just listening to him describe it. For his clients, Tom’s training style is designed to boost the heart rate and give you a full body workout by including Plyometrics and Burpies (yes, burpies – we had to have him say it twice. They are pseudo squat/push ups). As intimidated as we were, Tom assured us anyone could do it – regardless of ability. Join Tom, and us, each Thursday this summer at Summer in the Square. Tom is leading the 7AM running club and 9AM PowerHour (see Fitness schedule for specific information).
More photos of your summer trainer after the jump.
This summer, get in shape with us every Thursday for FREE during Summer in the Square. We’ve brought a whole line up of options to help put you in the best shape of your life.
at 7:00 AM join trainer Thomas McClelland from CLAY Health Club + Spa for an hour-long run. Thomas will lead you on a group stretch to make sure you’re in the best condition before a job through the neighborhood. At 8:00 AM join Ariane Hundt from Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp for an intense work out that is sure to burn off last night’s dessert…and then some. For those looking for something a little more zen, 9:00 AM brings Yoga with Christy Maskeroni of CLAY Health Club + Spa.
Did we mention this is all free?
